In whatever situation we find ourselves, there are three things needed to maintain a sense of calm and well-being:
- Controlling our perceptions. This means leveraging self-control to not allow emotions to cloud the issue. We can use the information our emotions give us to accurately discern the situation, see clearly, and have mental clarity.
- Appropriate actions. We want to be effective in our decisions and actions. This means acting from a place of love towards both ourselves and others.
- Acceptance of things outside our control. This is where our true power lies. When we can willingly accept the things outside our control – not begrudgingly but as if we had CHOSE them – we will find the wisdom to deal with anything that comes before us.
Being flexible in our thinking – mentally prepared for contingencies – and maintaining an attitude of gratitude in the present moment no matter what is happening will do much for our well-being and happiness.
Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NLT
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
